Friends, this set of essays on the possibilities and perspectives for a global movement, below, may be of interest. This follows on a previous discussion on 'Experiments in Movement Unity' with a lead essay by us on the Global Tapestry of Alternatives; the full discussion is at https://greattransition.org/gti-forum/experiments-movement-unity, and our essay in English and Spanish is also at:

We had also written an essay for this second round as a response to the various essays in that first round, which has not been included below, so I am attaching it here (in English and Spanish).

GTI Bulletin
January 2024

Dear friends,

At the turning of the year, traditionally a time of hope, we confront a grim truth: we’re in a world of trouble. Like a many-headed monster spewing conflict and chaos, the growing global “polycrisis” destabilizes and undermines our world, darkening our psyches. It emerges from a political and economic system adept at creating problems but inept at finding solutions, thereby spreading a zeitgeist of fear, despair, and reaction.

Still, the polycrisis also sparks social energy for building a civilization centered around people, peace, and planet. Active on countless fronts, this heterogeneous rising could coalesce into a mighty force, redirecting the historical trajectory from Barbarization to Great Transition.

But so far that emergence has not happened. Deeply fragmented, the many-faceted movement remains enfeebled by lack of shared vision and coherent strategy. We need to come together as a global citizens movement (GCM)—a polycentric ecology of associations under a canopy of common purpose.

The urgent task is to bring this critical social actor, now waiting in the wings, to the center of the global stage. But how? The new GTI Forum, asking What’s Next for the Global Movement?, examines possible next steps toward crystallizing a GCM. Our panel of strategists offers rich food for thought and bold agendas for action.

Carry it on,

Paul Raskin
GTI Director
