DIMENSIONS TO CONSIDER IN THE CONCEPTION OF THE VIRTUAL WSF JANUARY 2021 T61
by Vera Vratuša - Monday, 23 November 2020, 10:18 AM

The discussion on the form of a Virtual WSF event-process in January 2021 is being activated

I would like to share some observations, based on the reading of three “macro programming” proposals for this event

               text 58 - http://openfsm.net/projects/dibco1/dibco1-2020-discusionfsm-input58-enFrancine)

Reading these documents you can identify 6 dimensions that the discussion in the IC should clarify

 FACILITATION

 1 / PROCESS DIMENSION

An event alone, - or - also a process around the event, which allows time to mature online articulations towards action dates in 2021, and the event in Mexico

 2 / ORGANIZATIONAL-FACILITATING DIMENSION

Existence of “counterparts” / partners (that would not be participating in the social forum process? ) to co-organize an event in January (who would organize it on the side of “us”?), - or - a “COMPLETE” WSF SOCIAL FORUM JANUARY 2021, organized by a “FACILITATING GROUP” TO BE CONSTITUTED (as the facilitating group of 24 entities that organized fsm 2018 in Salvador deciding by consensus - What is the presence of IC organizations in this facilitating group? - What is the presence of other entities?)   This GF would be acting in CORRESPONSIBILITY with the IC (as in the previous 13 WSF editions) -

3 / PLURI PROCESS DIMENSION

The role of facilitating collective  of thematic and national forums: Some can be integrated into the facilitating group of the WSF January ( see above), or its working groups - or - some would be "in charge" of "thematic spaces"?, - or - they would just stimulate participation in the WSF January event-process.  This without participation in WSF January  FG  implying a "networkisation " of these forum processes

 PARTICIPATION

4 / SELF ORGANIZATION DIMENSION - SELF ARTICULATION

Respective proportions of self-organized participations -or- "thematic tables" organized centrally by a "facilitating group"

Of course, if there are "CO-ORGANIZED" TABLES (to remember a word that was used 15 years ago meaning organized by the GF), the facilitating group of the event will influence the composition of these tables, which are intended as a place of influence, either for (in whose name?) ”indicate” or “guide” the other participants; either to "produce a narrative" of problems, responsible, and "proposals". In these tables the participants who are not in the tables have a role of "audience"

If we view the January forum from the perspective of the participants entities - the formats of participation made available to participating entities or groups of entities are an important point to consider, so that they see the forum as empowering  and useful for their respective objectives  and expectations of participation

a / Announcement of ONLINE MULTI-SESSION ENCOUNTERS before or after the virtual WSF event, on behalf of participating organizations for in-depth dialogues and joint maturation of articulations

  • b / Announcement of ACTIVITIES (MONO SESSION) ONLINE OR FACE TO FACE to dialogue, make decisions or many other things -during the Virtual event - (present in text 58 and 59) - This format of brief dialogic participation is the only one that is proposed  to date   to WSF participants
  • c / Announcement of INITIATIVES (LUCHAS CAMPANAS PROJECTS PRACTICAS TRANSFORMADORAS) by groups articulated with dates for public actions, which can be the object of encounters online  and activities (the existence of “initiatives”, a form of active participation is implicit in text 59 to feed the Agora)
  • d / Production and dissemination on social networks of "NEWS FROM WSF" by participants in the event -process, who  say they do in the forum - to create a collective visibility - (this form of communicative participation is not mentioned in the 3 texts)

5 / THIRD PARTY NARRATIVE OR OWN WORD DIMENSION

"Own word" through announcements and self-documentation of encounters online and activities and description of self-organized initiatives, news, and expression in co-organized tables, - or - "reports by third parties" i-e groups of speakers, who summarize and synthesize the word of others, with what purpose and legitimacy? And how would these contents be perceived by (groups of)  participating entities having their own narrative?

6 / "PROJECTION IN ACTIONS" DIMENSION

self-organized Acting articulations, calling  for public actions, dates decentralized in territories or global, - or - call (s) for centralized mobilization (s) from the  thematic tables

Noting that the acting articulations promote "initiatives" that are embodied in action plans with possible "public action dates", with various types of actions, from simple public discussion to massive civil disobedience, and  this feeds the projection of participants in a future of concrete actions during an Agora at the end of the event,  which can be in virtual form (juxtaposition of many simultaneous virtual activities of initiative presentation, in which participants come according to their interests)
